WAPCMLS Strengthens Medical Laboratory Leadership Through FLLM Workshop
The West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS), Nigeria Chapter, has strengthened its commitment to developing effective leadership within the profession through the Foundation of Medical Laboratory Leadership and Management (FLLM) Workshop held across the geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
The South-West edition, held from August 25–28, 2026, at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba, Lagos, brought together Medical Laboratory leaders from across the zone for intensive training in leadership, management, communication, conflict resolution, strategic planning, teamwork and human-resource management.
The Nigeria Chapter Chairman of WAPCMLS, Prof. Musa Abidemi Muhibi, commended Medical Laboratory Scientists in managerial positions, particularly Chief Medical Laboratory Scientists (CMLS) and above, who took advantage of the programme.
According to him, “This is a strategic opportunity to strengthen leadership, management and professional competencies required for effective laboratory service delivery.”
The South-West Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Toyosi Yekeen Raheem, appreciated the College for approving and supporting the hosting of the training in the South-West. He also commended the participants for their active participation, cooperation and commitment throughout the four-day programme.
The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to share experiences and examine practical challenges confronting laboratory leadership. The training report noted improved post-test performance among participants, reflecting significant learning gains.
Participants resolved to translate the knowledge gained into improved leadership, teamwork, professionalism, accountability and quality management in their respective laboratories and institutions.
The initiative reinforces WAPCMLS’s vision of building a new generation of Medical Laboratory leaders capable of managing people and resources effectively while driving quality improvement and better patient care.
The facilitators for South West training included Professor Toyosi Yekeen Raheem, Professor Esther Ngozi Adejumo, Mrs Adedapo-Ismail and Adekoya Abimbola Julius.
As the workshop concluded, the message was clear: strong laboratory leadership is essential for strong laboratory services and, ultimately, quality healthcare delivery and patient safety.
