AMLAP’s Inaugural Scientific Conference Kicks Off in Style
The Association of Medical Laboratory Professionals (AMLAP) in Primary Healthcare Board, Nigeria, successfully launched her First Scientific Conference on August 26, 2025. The major event was preceded by a Free Medical Outreach program at fifty seven (57) Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LGA/LCDA) Flagship Centres across Lagos State.
The outreach program offered a range of services, including:
– Health talks
– Blood glucose level checks
– Blood pressure measurements
People with elevated blood sugar and blood pressure readings were referred to doctors for further evaluation and management.
The conference opening ceremony and grand finale were held on the 27th to 28th August 2025 at the Local Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Ikeja Lagos.
The Chairman of the occasion was Mr Kehinde Wojuade while the Chairperson was Princess Yomi Newton.
The acting Registrar of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr Donald Ofili was ably represented by Dr Paulinus Nnamdi Offutalus, the head MLSCN South West zonal office in Lagos.
His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulsemiu Orimadegun Kasali, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom was represented.
Comrade Toyin Ekundayo, the Director of Medical Laboratory Services, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board welcomed the participants and told them that the program will meet their expectations.
Dr Tolulope Funbi Jolaiya, the Chairman of the conference planning committee advised the members of the association to work together to revolutionize diagnostic services in primary health centers and to improve healthcare outcomes of our community.
In her speech, Mrs Oluwakemi Faduola, the acting National President, Association of Medical Laboratory Professionals in Primary Healthcare Board, Nigeria admonished the members to realize that the work of the Medical Laboratory professional in PHC is vital to disease diagnosis, prevention and management.

– Experts in the field
– Guest speakers with vast experience
– Medical laboratory professionals
The conference theme, “Revolutionizing Diagnostic Services in Primary Healthcare Centers: Harnessing Modern Technologies, Sustainability and Collaboration for Universal Health Coverage,” set the tone for the deliberations
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Oyewale Tomori, Chairman of the West Africa National Academy of Scientists and a pioneer in the field. Prof. Tomori’s wealth of experience and expertise provided valuable insights into the conference
Prof. Oyewale Tomori, a renowned expert in the field, delivered a thought-provoking keynote address that appealed to Nigeria’s political leaders , policy makers, and all stakeholders to optimize the country’s resources. He emphasized that Nigeria is not resource-limited but rather resource-wasteful.
Prof. Tomori cautioned that foreign aid can sometimes lead to internal problems, such as generating refuse instead of revenue. He questioned the methodology behind Nigeria’s health budget allocation, highlighting the need for a more effective and sustainable approach.
Prof. Tomori urged policymakers, healthcare providers, and stakeholders to:
1. Allocate resources to implement modern technologies in Primary Healthcare diagnostic services.
2. Develop sustainable models for PHC diagnostic services in both rural and urban areas, ensuring long-term viability and impact.
Other speakers include Prof. Akin Osibogun who spoke on Universal Health Coverage and Access to Diagnostic Services in PHCs, Dr Ismail Abdus-Salam delivered a lecture titled Primary Health Laboratories in Effective Responses to Infectious Disease Outbreak, Dr T. Y. Raheem delivered a presentation on Sustainability, Collaboration and Partnership in PHC Laboratory Services, Evolving Roles of Medical Professionals: Essential Skills for Diagnosis in Primary Health was delivered by Dr Oloruntoba Ekun.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training was done by Dr Salmon Abeeb Oladapo.
Dr Tolulope Adaran brilliantly delivered a presentation on the Best Practices for Quality and Efficiency: Investing in PHC Laboratory Services.
Princess Yomi Newton got the attention of the participants in her lecture on the Lagos State Primary Healthcare laboratory Services: Past, Present and future.
Awards were given to the individual who contributed to the success of the program and the healthcare system in general.
