MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE COUNCIL OF NIGERIA (MLSCN) INDUCTS MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS.

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) inducted the 45 Medical Laboratory Scientists that graduated from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG) during the 8th induction ceremony of the department on Thursday 20th February 2025 at the Old Great Hall of the College.

The Vice Challenlor of the University, Prof. Folashade Ogunshola who was represented by Prof. Olusoji Ilori advised the inductees to take the ceremony as the beginning of the greater heights in life. She told them to always remember to add values to themselves wherever they find themselves in the world.

The Provost of the College, Prof. Ademola Oremosu appealed to the inductees to act as good Ambassadors of the University. He asked them to represent excellence, integrity and to uphold the ethics of their profession.

 

Dr Anyanwu Okechukwu Charles 

The Guest Lecturer, Dr (Chief) Anyanwu Okechukwu Charles, the Group Managing Director of DCL Group spoke on the topic “Expanding the Art of Indigenous Manufacturing of IVDs: a Gown to Town Panacea in National Development”.

He admonished the inductees to be patriotic without which they cannot be talking of national development. He gave an example of how the Chinese patriotically developed their country with the experience they gathered from all over the world.

He went further to emphasize that “you think of what you will add to the National Development in terms of industrialization. Local production is where the Nigerian government should look into. The University should be encouraged to do more research that will encourage local production. I will encourage you not to go and set up just laboratory instead put resources together and set up “Mega Laboratory”

He advised the government to look into the problems of the indigenous Manufacturers as regards to the provision of the social amenities.

Dr Anyanwu Okechukwu called on the government to correct the situation where the IVD productions are being regulated by both the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

In his speech, the Registrar of MLSCN, Prof. Tosan Erhabor, represented by Dr Gregory Uchuno, Director, Scientists’ Regulation and Discipline commended the 43 inductees including the two from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomosho Oyo State for the successful completion of their training. He promised that the twelve inductees with first class will be rewarded by the Council to serve as motivation for those coming behind.

The Registrar/CEO, charged the training institutions to work with the MLSCN to bring forth the change agents in the Medical Laboratory Science Profession.

Professor Tosan Erhabor, thanked the Senior Medical Laboratory Scientists for supporting MLSCN in bringing about the new innovations and ideas that are aimed at turning the fortune of the Council.

He mentioned that one of the innovations included the renewal of license which has become seamless and timely. He warned that nobody should contact an agent to renew their license.

Prof. Kolawole Oyedeji 

The Head , Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Professor Kolawole Oyedeji while presenting the 43 (UNILAG) and 2 ( LAUTECH) graduands pointed out the number of distinction candidates from UNILAG which is about 30%. This is unprecedented in the history of the budding Department which is a pointer to the astuteness of the teachers , he reiterated. Being the 8th induction the Department is waxing stronger on professional development in Medical Laboratory Science Education in Nigeria and we can make bold to say our products are sellable professionals all over the world.

The best inductees were awarded with cash donations while the department received donations of equipment from the invited guests.
