GMLD Lagos, LASCOHET Forge Partnership to Strengthen Medical Laboratory Technician Training
In a move aimed at strengthening medical laboratory technician education and professional development, the Executive Members of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD), Lagos State Branch, paid a courtesy visit to the Provost and Management Team of the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET), Yaba, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
The delegation, led by the Vice Chairman of GMLD Lagos State Branch, Mr. Ikechukwu Unamba, was warmly received by the Provost of the College, Professor Raheem Olasupo Akewushola, alongside the members of the institution’s management team.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Unamba conveyed the goodwill of the Chairman of GMLD Lagos State Branch, Mrs. Mark Doris Chinelo Callistus, and commended the Provost for the remarkable growth, development, and transformation the institution has witnessed since his assumption of office.
He stated that the visit was not only to acknowledge the achievements of the College leadership but also to explore areas of collaboration that would benefit students and advance the medical laboratory profession. According to him, GMLD Lagos seeks to partner with LASCOHET in providing industrial training placement opportunities for the students, facilitating employment prospects for graduates, offering mentorship programmes, and serving as professional role models for Medical Laboratory Technicians undergoing training.
Mr. Unamba emphasized that stronger collaboration between industry practitioners and academic institutions is essential for producing competent, industry-ready professionals capable of meeting the growing healthcare needs of the society.
Responding, Professor Akewushola expressed appreciation to the GMLD delegation for the visit and for initiating discussions toward a strategic partnership with the institution. He described the proposed collaboration as timely, impactful, and mutually beneficial, assuring the Guild members of the college’s readiness to work together in all identified areas.
According to the Provost, the partnership will not only enrich students’ educational experiences but also provide a clearer pathway for their professional growth and career advancement.
He further disclosed plans by the college to organize regular interactive forums between students and members of the GMLD to expose aspiring Medical Laboratory Technicians to experienced professionals, broaden their industry perspectives, and inspire confidence in the future of the profession.
Also speaking, the Deputy Provost (Administration), Dr. Oyeronke Izobo, welcomed the proposed collaboration and described it as a valuable opportunity for both the students and the institution. She, however, urged the GMLD members to ensure that internship and industrial training programme are adequately supervised and that the students are protected from all forms of exploitations and abuses during their placements.
Other members of the college management team present at the meeting included the Registrar, Mr. Christopher Olusegun Ekundayo; the Bursar, Mrs. Adesola Bukonla Abisola; the Librarian, Mrs. Agbooba Olusola; and the Dean, School of Medical Laboratory Technician, Mrs. Adekoya Vivien Emecham.
Members of the GMLD delegation included the Immediate Past Chairman, Mr. Adekoya Abimbola Julius; the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Vincent Iwunze; and the Welfare Officer, Mrs. Adedayo Ojo.
The visit underscores the commitment of both institutions to fostering academic excellence, professional mentorship, workforce development, and sustainable capacity building within Nigeria’s medical laboratory sector.
