SMLS UCH Ibadan Alumni Set for Golden Anniversary Homecoming
Preparations have reached an exciting crescendo as the School of Medical Laboratory Science (SMLS), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan counts down to its highly anticipated 50th Anniversary celebration.
Although, the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Ibadan is more than 50 years. It started in 1953 at Adeoyo. The SMLS UCH is the first purpose built SMLS in Nigeria and now 50. Those coming include graduates of the program before 1975
Alumni of the institution, spread across various nations of the world, are returning home to honour five decades of academic excellence, professional impact and institutional legacy.
According to the Anniversary Planning Committee, activities officially commence on Thursday, 6th November 2025 with a courtesy visit to the Governor of Oyo State, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly who is also the Chairman of the occasion, Chairman House committee on health, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Oyo State and the management of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The opening day will climax with a welcoming cocktail reception to warmly receive returning alumni to their base.
It is interesting to note that four of the past National Presidents of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) are products of SMLS Ibadan. It was confirmed that two of them, Dr G. C. Okara and Dr T. Y. Raheem will be in attendance.
The Golden Anniversary Lecture holds on Friday, 7th November 2025, and will be delivered by respected scholar, Prof. John Anetor, on the theme: “Recalling Our ‘Utopian’ Roots (Past): Building for a Resilient Future With Vision and Convergence in Divergence.”
Following the lecture, there will be an Alumni Interactive Session featuring multi-generational dialogue, engagement and professional networking aimed at strengthening interconnectivity between past and current graduates.
The climax of the celebration will be the Anniversary Luncheon/Banquet, described as a grand feast of legacy, laughter and lifelong bonds. At the banquet, distinguished alumni will receive awards of recognition for outstanding contributions to the profession.
The celebration will also witness the election and inauguration of a new executive leadership for the alumni body as the institution takes bold steps towards its next 50 years.
As the days draw closer, excitement continues to build among former students of SMLS UCH Ibadan, many of whom regard the Golden Jubilee as a historic moment — not just to reminisce on the journey so far, but to recommit to sustaining the institutional heritage that has shaped medical laboratory science practice in Nigeria and beyond.
