EGBUNA BOWS OUT OF SERVICE.

The Director of Medical Laboratory Services, Lagos State Health Services Commission, Mrs Egbuna Olufunmilayo Adeyinka has honorably retired from the active service of the Lagos State Health Services Commission.

She was colourfully celebrated for her 60th birthday and the statutory retirement on Thursday, 7th August 2025 at Yoruba Tennis Club Onikan, Lagos.

The opening prayer, which was the Jerusalem version, was conducted by Mrs Funmilayo Adetoun Adegbite, the Director of the Medical Laboratory Services (DMLS)  at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The Chairperson of the Sendforth Planning Committee, Mrs Adijat Kuburat Farri, the Director, Medical Laboratory Services (DMLS) Orile Agege General Hospital welcomed the guests. She extolled the virtues of the celebrant. She described Mrs Egbuna Olufunmilayo as a dedicated leader with visions and passion for the work and the personnel welfare.

The Chairman of the day, Mrs Yinka Shokunbi, the President of the Ogun State University Pioneer Alumni Association (OSUPAA) and the Managing Editor of the Style plus online described the celebrant as a good friend and a leader. She commended her for being able to manage the demands for her attention at both the home front and the working place.

Mrs Egbuna had a  B.Sc in Microbiology in 1986 from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University). Motivated by the desire to contribute meaningfully to healthcare, she enrolled in the school of the Medical Laboratory Sciences, General Hospital Lagos (as done in those days) and qualified in 1990.

She obtained a Masters of Science (M.Sc) degree in Medical Microbiology from the Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2024.

Mrs Egbuna Olufunmilayo started her career in the Lagos State Civil service with her first posting to General Hospital Odan. She has moved to different General Hospitals (GH) Ikeja, GH Gbagada, GH Orile Agege, Apapa GH, Ajeromi GH and Mainland Hospital.

As a Director of Medical Laboratory Services, she led with vision and compassion. Her tenure witnessed significant improvements, among which is the  Enrollment of ten General Hospitals into Quality Management System (QMS) implementation, achieving at least a two-star SLIPTA rating in each participating hospital laboratory as well as promoting collaboration and mentorship across the state Laboratory network.

She is married to Mr Napoleon Ugochuckwu Egbuna and blessed with children.

Those present at the occasion were the Lagos State Health Service Commission Board members were fully represented led by the Chairman – Dr.(Mrs). Atinuke Onayiga, the DMS – Dr. Adegbite; Commissioner 3 – Dr. (Mrs.) Adejumo amongst others.

Retired MLS Danmola, Akinola Anjou, and Yomi Newton were also in attendance. Alhaji Tajudeen Olatunji, the immediate past DMLS and the celebrant’s predecessor was visibly present. A retired Med. Lab. Technician- Mrs Oyewole also graced the occasion.

Chief Medical Director of Onikan General Hospital – Dr. Madewa Adebajo, the Chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) Lagos State, Mr Abioye Omoyemi, the Chairman of the Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD) Lagos State, Mr Adekoya Abimbola Julius were dignitaries that added colour to the event.
