HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL LAGOS RESIDENTS – PROF. AKIN ABAYOMI

HCPAN LAGOS GETS NEW EXECUTIVE MEMBERS

The annual conference of the Healthcare Providers Association of Nigeria (HCPAN) was held on 15th October 2024 at LCCI Alausa Ikeja with the theme “Leveraging Digital Technology to Improve Residents’ Enrollment and Enhance Providers’ Efficiency in the Nation’s Health Insurance Programme”. The Chairman of the occasion was past president of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Michael Olawale-Cole.

In her opening address, Pharm. Abiola Paul-Ozieh, Chairman HCPAN LAGOS,stressed the urgent need for digital transformation in Nigeria’s healthcare system, commending the Lagos State Government’s recent Executive Order aimed at expanding health insurance coverage for all residents.
Stressing that the Executive Order aims to make the Mandatory Social Health Insurance Programme a reality, she said it also showed the state government’s commitment to the NHIA Act 2022 and the Lagos State Health Scheme.

Pharm Paul-Ozieh further commended the government’s efforts over the past four years, particularly the Ilera-Eko Programme aimed at improving healthcare access.

Speaking at the scientific conference, the Lagos state commissioner for health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said there was a need for innovative solutions as Nigeria grapples with challenges in its healthcare system.
He insisted that the integration of technology into healthcare is not just an option but a necessity.
Prof Abayomi noted that the recent executive order mandating health insurance coverage for all Lagos residents is a landmark decision that would reset the economic clock of healthcare delivery in the state and would ensure that no resident is left without access to quality healthcare.

The goal is to provide financial protection for our citizens and ensure that healthcare is affordable and accessible to everyone, regardless of their income status. We are committed to ensuring every Lagosian carries health insurance, whether public or private so that we can inject more resources into the health sector and elevate healthcare delivery.”

In his presentation, “Leveraging Digital Technology to Improve Residents’ Enrollment and Enhance Providers’ Efficiency in the Nation’s Health Insurance Programme,” Dr. Jephtah Aletan, the keynote Speaker, said the future of healthcare is digital and that the time for transformation is now.

Digital technology can revolutionize Nigeria’s health insurance by improving access and efficiency. It’s time for stakeholders to embrace this transformation to achieve better healthcare for all.”
