FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DISTRIBUTES TRUENAT MACHINES TO STOP TB

The efforts to eradicate the effects of tuberculosis in Nigeria was boosted by the deployment of Truenat machines to some medical facilities recently. The training of Medical Laboratory personnel on Truenat MTB/RIF diagnostic technology was organized by National Tuberculosis, Buruli Ulcer and Leprosy Control Program (NTBLCP) supported by Global fund. The 3-day events took place at Orchid hotel Lekki Lagos from 6th to 8th January 2025.

The Global Fund has recently procured 333 Truenat machines to enhance tuberculosis patients’ timely diagnosis and management. The Truenat MTB Assay employs chip-based real-time micro-PCR technology for the semi-quantitative detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) directly from sputum specimens. These automated, battery-operated devices enable the extraction, amplification, and detection of specific genomic DNA loci, making them suitable for deployment at all healthcare facilities.

To support the rollout of this initiative, the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program (NTBLCP) organized a 3-day training and installation program in collaboration with Weiestrass Micheal and with support from the Global Fund.

The objectives of the Training are;
To build the capacity of participants on the use and interpretation of the Truenat MTB/RIF Assay.

To ensure participants understand the operational and maintenance protocols of the Truenat platform.

Twenty (20) participants each from three States of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo took part in the training .

The training facilitators included Dr. Iyang Nyoho, Mrs. Adetunji , MLS Aliu Omoh A. , Eng. Michael Weistrass and Mr Rayi Oluwagbemiga.

MLS Aliu Omoh, Lagos State TB Quality Assurance Officer anchored the training Programme on behalf of the NTBLCP
