Radiographers Celebrate World Radiography Day 2025 in Grand Style
The Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN), Lagos State Branch, on Saturday, November 8, 2025, joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Radiography Day at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba, Lagos. The event, themed “Empowering Healthcare Through Imaging Excellence”, brought together radiography professionals, students, and healthcare stakeholders in an atmosphere of reflection, recognition, and inspiration.
The event was held under the distinguished chairmanship of Hon. Dr. A. F. K. Bakre, a former Chairman of ARN Lagos and past Chairman of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN).
In her welcome address, Rad. Mary Olayinka, Chairman of ARN Lagos, emphasized the central role of radiographers in advancing modern healthcare. She described the profession as one built on dedication to service—service to patients, to science, and to humanity, urging members to remain steadfast in professional excellence and ethical conduct.
The Chairman of the 2025 World Radiography Day Committee, Rad. Sule Joshua, encouraged members to look beyond the machines they operate and focus on compassion and competence. “Excellence in imaging begins with the heart—committed to care, to competence, and to community,” he said.
In his address, Dr. Bakre commended the association for fostering a healthy relationship with the regulatory board and urged radiographers to uphold the highest standards of professional practice. He praised the progress the association has made in positioning radiography as an indispensable pillar in medical diagnosis.
The keynote lecture, delivered by Dr. Humphrey Chidi Ebele Ugwu, traced the evolution of radiography from darkroom and film-based systems to the present-day digital imaging technologies that have revolutionized medical diagnostics.

Complementing his presentation, Rad. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Balogun, a past President of ARN, spoke on the vision of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT), highlighting its mission to enhance global healthcare delivery, promote equity, and strengthen professional collaboration among radiographers worldwide.
Other notable speakers included Dr. Robert Akhigbe and Rad. Victor Okon, who each spoke on advancing quality and innovation in radiographic practice.
The event was graced by elders of the profession, including Mrs. Adebisi Onojobi-Daniel, Prince Ayo Okhiria, Elder C. L. Abara, Barr. R. S. J. Babatunde, Rad. (Mrs.) Comfort Olulode, Rad. Victor Sewoniku, Mrs. Okubadejo, and Rad. Opeoluwa Oduwole, the immediate past Chairman of ARN Lagos.
Among invited guests were Adekoya Abimbola Julius and Unamba Ikechukwu Valentine, Chairman and Assistant Secretary General of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD), Lagos, respectively.
A creative highlight of the event came from a spoken word performance by Opeyemi Dahunsi, former Editor-in-Chief of the National Association of Radiographers, UNILAG Chapter. Her captivating delivery celebrated the profession’s impact, declaring, “We don’t just calibrate machines; we calibrate our hearts. We are the light of modern medicine—the light behind every diagnosis.” Her performance received a standing ovation.
The ceremony culminated in an awards presentation honoring distinguished members and supporters of the profession, including Rad. (Mrs.) Dame Adebisi Olufon (KJW), Chief Mrs. Mary Kehinde Omiyi, Rad. The celebration concluded with the ceremonial cutting of the cake and a vibrant photoshoot session featuring radiographers, students, and ISRRT members. A vote of thanks by Rad. Mrs. Mary Olayinka brought the curtain down on a memorable event that reaffirmed the radiography profession’s vital place in the nation’s healthcare system.
